River Run Touring Route Guide River Run Touring Route Guide

The Rivers Run Touring Route is a region of diversity. Located in the heart of Tasmania you will experience everything from rural vistas of fertile pastrures, hills and valleys to rugged mountain ranges, highland lakes teeming with trout, towering forests and wilderness.

The majestic Derwent River system is the lifeblood of the region. Starting high in the mountains and then, through a network of streams and marshes, it flows through the landscape to become a grand wide river at New Norfolk.

This region encompasses two great journeys.

Along The Heritage and Nature Trail, the Derwent Valley experience starts at Granton and New Norfolk, on the western side of the Derwent, through Bushy Park and Plenty to Westerway, the Tyenna Valley and Mt Field National Park. It continues west to the big forests of the Styx Valley and on to Strathgordon in the Tasmanian Wilderness Work Heritage Area before returning to New Norfolk via Ellendale and Hamilton.

The Highlands Trail passes through fertile countryside, with fine woolgrowing, grazing and cropping lands giving way to the highland lakes of the sub-alpine Central Plateau. It encompasses the historic towns of Bothwell and Hamilton as well as the rugged grandeur of the Hydro Power Schemes.
